PVS Chemicals – Lifting and Transport of a 45-Tonne Tank in Ghent

At PVS Chemicals in Ghent, a 45-tonne tank was recently installed to increase production capacity. For this project, we collaborated with Sarens, who handled the lifting and transport work, including the necessary engineering, preparation of lifting, transport, and tackle plans, as well as project supervision during the operations. Engineering Experts took care of all other project-related engineering and project coordination.

Challenge: Limited Space, Heavy Load

The location posed specific challenges: limited maneuvering space and an underground technical structure that restricted crane positions. The tank itself, with a height of 16.5 meters and a width of 8.7 meters, was no simple object to move and install.

Solution: Smart Configuration, Pragmatic Approach

Sarens chose an AC700 crane in HaSSL configuration (500 tons), combined with a 10-line modular trailer, a 70-ton auxiliary crane, and ballast wagons. This setup proved ideal: it provided sufficient lifting capacity while remaining flexible and efficient within the confined site area.

To ensure transport stability, additional weights were added to the modular trailer. Two steel beams were also required to support the tank on the modular trailer.

Execution: Safe and On Schedule

The AC700 was delivered and assembled the day before the lift, so that on the morning of the operation, all components were immediately operational. Despite the somewhat cloudy weather, the installation proceeded flawlessly, faster than the planned schedule, with maximum attention to safety.

Impact: Growth for PVS Chemicals

Thanks to this new tank, PVS Chemicals can expand its production, which is crucial for their role in the chemical sector — a key industry for Belgium with significant economic impact. By combining technical partners like us (Engineering Experts) and Sarens, complex engineering becomes manageable and reliable for them.
