When a Drinking Water Network Gradually Falls Behind

For many companies, a properly functioning drinking water network is taken for granted. As long as no issues arise, the system often receives little attention. However, over the years, expansions, process changes, and technical modifications can cause the original documentation and the actual installation to diverge significantly. This was the case for an industrial client whose internal drinking water network no longer fully complied with current standards and regulations. The existing setup was insufficiently documented, and not all consumers and connection points were aligned with the applicable regulatory requirements. To prevent future risks and potential non-conformities during inspections, Engineering Experts was asked to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the installation and develop a compliance roadmap.

A Structured Approach: From Analysis to Implementation Plan

The first step involved a thorough assessment of the existing drinking water installation. During this phase, the actual on-site situation was compared with the available documentation. Based on the findings, Engineering Experts updated and upgraded the existing Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID), ensuring that the drinking water system was once again accurately and comprehensively documented. Next, all consumers and connection points were reviewed and assessed against the applicable standards and Belgaqua guidelines. This analysis identified where the installation deviated from regulatory requirements and determined the technical measures needed to restore compliance. In close cooperation with the inspection body, all identified observations and points of attention were discussed and validated. This resulted in a clear and actionable plan detailing the modifications required to bring the installation fully in line with current regulations. Meanwhile, a contractor has been selected and appointed, and preparations for the execution phase are now underway.

From Risk to Compliance

Thanks to this comprehensive analysis, the client now benefits from:

  • An up-to-date and reliable P&ID of the drinking water installation
  • A clear overview of all deviations from current standards and regulations
  • A practical implementation plan for the required modifications
  • A coordinated approach developed in consultation with the inspection body
  • A clear path toward a successful re-inspection

Once the planned modifications have been completed, the installation can be resubmitted for inspection, with the objective of obtaining a positive compliance report and securing a future-proof drinking water infrastructure.

What Can Other Companies Learn from This?

Drinking water systems, utilities, and technical infrastructure often evolve alongside a company’s growth over many years. Individual changes may seem minor in isolation, but over time they can result in an installation that no longer complies with current requirements. By regularly evaluating systems, keeping documentation up to date, and periodically verifying compliance with applicable regulations, companies can avoid unexpected investments, time pressure during inspections, and extensive corrective projects. Preventive asset management remains significantly simpler and more cost-effective than undertaking major corrective actions after years of accumulated changes.

“Maintaining a drinking water installation involves more than ensuring a reliable water supply. By assessing installations proactively and keeping documentation current, companies can prevent compliance issues and stay aligned with continuously evolving regulations.”
