For a leading player in the chemical industry, Engineering Experts delivered the complete engineering and commissioning of a new installation for the storage of liquid sulfur. From concept to final handover, we took full responsibility for the project, with one clear focus: a safe, reliable, and high‑performance installation from day one.

Challenge: Critical Process Conditions and High Safety Requirements

The storage of liquid sulfur involves specific technical challenges. The product must remain liquid at all times, requiring precise control of temperature, pressure, and flow.
A properly designed system for steam tracing, insulation, and instrumentation is therefore essential. At the same time, the entire installation had to comply with strict safety standards, including ATEX zoning and pressure equipment regulations (PED).

Our Approach: Integrated Engineering from A to Z

Engineering Experts was responsible for the complete design and coordination of the installation:
  • Mechanical and process engineering: piping layouts, sizing, isometrics, and support structures
  • Electrical design: cable routing, grounding, and connection of field instrumentation
  • Instrumentation: selection and specification of, among others, radar level measurement, pressure and temperature sensors, and flow measurements
  • Steam system: design and integration of a new steam pressure‑reducing skid in accordance with PED guidelines
Thanks to this integrated approach, we were able to perfectly align all disciplines and deliver a robust and reliable installation.

Commissioning: A Controlled Path to Operational Reliability

Following construction, Engineering Experts led the complete commissioning of the installation. This phase was carried out using a structured, safety‑first approach, with every component thoroughly tested and validated.
Key steps in the commissioning process included:
  • I/O testing and signal verification between field devices and the control system
  • Calibration of instrumentation to ensure accurate measurements
  • Functional testing of control valves and pumps
  • Leak testing of process and steam piping
  • Phased start‑up of the steam system, with gradual pressure build‑up and inspection
This approach ensured maximum control and allowed any deviations to be detected and corrected at an early stage.
